Advanced Fire Fighting Simulator (AFS) is intended for training officers in advanced firefighting in accordance with Section A-VI/3 of STCW Code requirements in the part concerning control fire fighting operations aboard ships and organization of fire parties.

Purpose

Advanced Fire Fighting Simulator is intended for training officers in advanced fire fighting in accordance with Section A-VI/3 of STCW Code requirements in the part concerning control fire fighting operations aboard ships and organization of fire parties.

List of basic knowledge and skills, worked out with the use of Advanced Fire Fighting Simulator:

  • Organization and control of fire-fighting operations;
  • Strategies and tactics for control of fires in various parts of the ship;
  • Communication and coordination during fire-fighting operations;
  • Control of ventilation, fuel and electrical systems

Software structure

Software consists of Instructor WorkPlace and several Student WorkPlaces which interact in local network.

To compose exercises there is a “Scenario Editor” module.

Software of each Student WorkPlace provides access to each area of the simulated ship. Student WorkPlace contains a menu with the choice of the areas.

Instructor sets out the areas list which may be activated by the user of each particular Student WorkPlace. In such a manner there is a possibility of casting control during drilling of fire-fighting operations.

Software of the simulator can be installed in the computer class or in spaces which provide truly realistic training conditions (e.g. simulated shipboard conditions).

Instructor WorkPlace functions

Control of training is carried out from the Instructor WorkPlace. Software provides the following functions:

  • Development and issue of the exercises to the students. Scenario of fire-fighting procedures is ascertained in the task.
    • Exercises are saved in separate files for multiple-use;
    • Instructor can control the sequence of actions which are contained in training scenario;
    • Exercise contains a fire control plan, copies of the fire-extinguishing operational plan, muster list, emergency parties control scheme which are prepared for the simulated ship in the exercise. This data is available on the corresponding Student WorkPlaces.
  • Record-keeping of actions taken by the students, including record of conversations by communication means.
  • Immediate change of fire growth scenarios.
  • Input of failures in ship equipment and fire-fighting systems;
  • Fire-fighting coastal service functions simulation while drilling actions during the fire on the berth.
  • Modeling of Rescue Coordination Center functions while drilling actions during the fire at sea.
  • VHF radio is simulated on the Instructor WorkPlace to provide radio communications of the simulated ship with the shore-based services.

Student WorkPlace functions

Student WorkPlace allows drilling interaction of the head of fire extinguishing, MSB room, commander of the fire party and leader of the exploration group using different communication facilities as well as watchkeeping duties, checks and inspections.

Student WorkPlace simulates environment in different parts of the ship, including rooms that are involved in ship systems control, such as Wheelhouse, MSB room, Fire pump room as well as Engine room, galley, cabin, ship's hold etc., in which fires are simulated.

Student has a possibility to virtually move in the rooms and among them.

For drilling advanced fire fighting on the ship the simulator contains the following Student WorkPlaces:

  • “Wheelhouse”;
  • “MSB room”;
  • “Fire control”
  • “Commander of the exploration group and members of the fire party”

Student WorkPlace general view

In the left part of the Student WorkPlace window there is the list of rooms in which student can “move”. The list of rooms available for each Student WorkPlace is generated by the instructor.

The central part of the window shows interactive 3D model of the room.

In the right part of the window there are individual protection means, active equipment, for example a fire extinguisher and VHF Portable which is used for reports and communications. Student operates different means with the mouse.

 “Wheelhouse” Student WorkPlace.

On “Wheelhouse” Student WorkPlace there is an environment on the bridge simulated. The screen shows 3D model of the navigational bridge with the equipment on it. Student has an opportunity of the virtual movement on the bridge. When cursor is moved to the simulated equipment the screen shows an image zoomed in. Operation of its control organs (displays, indicators, press buttons etc.) is simulated in accordance with real equipment operation algorithm.

Sound signals produced by equipment: fire alarm (ring), alarm signals, produced by the fire detection systems, smoke-detecting installation in the hold.

 “MSB room” Student WorkPlace

“MSB room” Student WorkPlace simulates environment of the main switchboard of an engine room.
The screen shows 3D model of the MSB room with its equipment. The student can virtually move in MSB room. If you move a cursor to the simulated equipment the screen shows an image zoomed in. Operation of its control organs (displays, indicators, press buttons etc.) is simulated in accordance with real equipment operation algorithm.

In case of fire in MSB room the access to the equipment control organs there is blocked.

 “Fire control” Student WorkPlace

On “Fire control” Student WorkPlace there is a place simulated from which are maintained:  fire party activities control, communication with the wheelhouse, exploration group and with extinguishing group.

“Fire control” Student WorkPlace provides an opportunity to use the following equipment: ship loudspeaker communications, VHF radio, which simulators are in the separate program window.

Student has access to the following ship documents:

  • fire control plan;
  • fire fighting plan;
  • muster list;
  • emergency parties control scheme.

“Commander of the exploration group and members of the fire party” Student WorkPlace

This Student WorkPlace simulates the following ship partitions:

  • EDG Room;
  • Engine room;
  • Outer deck;
  • Galley;
  • Cabin;
  • Cargo hold;
  • Fire locker;
  • Fire pump room;
  • СО2 distant release;
  • VHF portable radio;
  • Main deck passage.

Engine room

In accordance with operational situation and orders from Wheelhouse student can move in Engine room partitions in order he could visually evaluate or use fire extinguishing means and systems.

EDG Room

Visual environment of the EDG Room inner part as well as the exterior part including the sealed door, ventilating openings, СО2 distant release station, fuel stop control valve.

Cargo hold

There is a schematic diagram of a cargo hold. Diagram includes locations of the sounding pipes and temperature control points at the outer deck.

Student can control the temperature in the sounding pipes and on the outer deck surface.

Also the diagram includes ventilation openings closings which should be sealed on the order from the wheelhouse before СО2 fire fighting system is turned on.

Other rooms

Other earlier mentioned rooms on commander of the exploration group and members of the fire party.

Student WorkPlace are simulated in the same way.
